Rooted In The Work

Herbs and Happiness has never just been about tea. It's about approachable wellness — the kind that belongs to everybody, especially the folks and neighborhoods too often left out of the wellness conversation. That belief doesn't stop at our blends; it grows out into the community we're part of.

Rooted in Ensley

One of the places that work lives is Rooted in Ensley, a community garden and education project in Ensley, Birmingham — right near historic Tuxedo Junction. What started in a courtyard has grown into a pollinator and flower space plus an in-ground garden growing culturally relevant food: watermelon, okra, beans, squash, tomatoes, and herbs. Food that means something. Food that feeds people who live right there.

I co-lead Rooted in Ensley alongside its founder, Derrick Lilly Jr, guiding the education and herbal wellness side of the work. Our Collective Work has engaged 70+ Birmingham Families, and it's grown beyond gardening basics into the bigger stuff: ecosystems, sustainability, stewardship, community ownership, and being honest about the struggle.

This is the heartbeat behind Herbs and Happiness. When you support this brand, you're part of an ecosystem that reaches back into the soil of Ensley.
